Pittsburgh police: Carrick homicide was a robbery over $190 in marijuana

A shooting early Sunday that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Carrick man stemmed from a drug deal gone awry, according to criminal complaints filed against the suspects.

Four young men — Maurice Nelson, Amier Windsor, Korie Miller and a male juvenile identified as “Conspirator #4” — scrolled through Windsor’s Snapchat app looking for someone to sell them marijuana early Sunday morning, the criminal complaint said.

They found Jacob Deinert, the victim, who agreed to sell them a “zip,” or ounce, of marijuana for $190, police said.

The problem? The four men only had $100. So they were planning “to finesse,” or rob, Deinert and take all his marijuana, according to the complaint. Police say all four agreed to the robbery and they came to meet Deinert with a Glock pistol and a 50-round drum magazine.

After meeting behind a BP station on Concordia Street in Carrick, Windsor recognized Deinert — they were “childhood friends” and had played basketball together in Carrick as kids — the criminal complaint said.

Police say Miller shot Deinert and then tossed the gun to Nelson, who fired at the victim twice more.

After rifling through Deinert’s pockets and taking his cellphone and marijuana, the four drove away in a Kia stolen out of Glassport, police said. They threw the phone out the car window; it was later was recovered.

First responders answered the call shortly before 6:30 a.m. and found Deinert dead in a large pool of blood. He had been shot at least once in the face. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office this week ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said they tracked the Kia to the nearest video surveillance camera by following bloody tracks it left on two streets because the car’s tires were saturated by the blood.

The four men later were involved in a Monday afternoon police chase down Route 51 that ended when that Kia crashed at a different BP station near Woodruff Street, police said. Police at the scene noticed apparent blood still on the Kia’s tires.

Nelson, 20, and Windsor, a 17-year-old who had been reported missing, each were charged Tuesday with criminal homicide, robbery and criminal conspiracy in the shooting. Windsor is charged as an adult.

Police spokespeople did not return emails seeking comment Wednesday about whether additional charges are expected against Miller and “Conspirator #4,” both of whom police apprehended after the Route 51 chase.

Windsor appeared remorseful to police for his alleged role in the crime.

“Numerous times during the interview, Windsor broke down into tears, crying that the victim ‘Jake’ was an innocent man and did not deserve what happened to him, and that he could not get the image of ‘Jake’ shot in the face out of his head,” the complaint said.

The criminal complaint continued: “Windsor stated that when Miller shot the victim, Windsor began to cry and hid his head down in the front seat,” the report added. “He stated that the rest of them called him ‘a b—ch’ for crying and that Miller stated that they saw him ‘get his first body’ and if they told on him, he and (the unidentified juvenile) would kill them next.”

The investigation is ongoing.
