Pittsburgh police said the suspect who robbed a Downtown bank Tuesday morning and used a bus as his getaway vehicle had committed similar robberies just weeks ago.

The suspect, Calvin Leavy, 68, of Pride Street in Uptown, was arrested Tuesday in the Midtown section of the city, police said. They said Leavy had taken a Port Authority bus after robbing the First National Bank in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue at 9:15 a.m.

Detectives and FBI agents caught the suspect, police said. He is accused of demanding money and indicating he had a gun during the incident, although no one saw a weapon.

Suspect in Jan. 31 hold-ups

Leavy also is accused of the Jan. 31 robberies of the First National Bank on Forbes Avenue and PNC Bank on Fifth Avenue. Police did not reveal how much money was taken from the banks during the robberies.

Leavy was lodged in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond, on charges of three counts of robbery and two counts of theft.

Leavy faces a preliminary hearing on Feb. 17 before District Judge Kim Berkeley Clark.
