Pittsburgh officials announced Friday that warming centers will be available throughout the city as temperatures drop.

The city is opening Beechview Healthy Active Living Community Center, Brighton Heights Healthy Active Living Community Center, Greenfield Healthy Active Living Community Center, Homewood Healthy Active Living Community Center, Sheraden Healthy Active Living Community Center and South Side Market House Healthy Active Living Community Center as warming centers until 7 p.m. Friday.

This comes as the region is seeing cold temperatures with below-zero wind chill, according to the National Weather Service. The chilly conditions were caused by an arctic cold front that moved into the area from the north Thursday night.

Pittsburgh typically activates warming centers when the forecasted highs are predicted below 20 degrees.

In addition to the warming centers, various recreation centers also will be open Friday where people can warm up:

Ammon from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m. Arlington from 10 a.m. till 7 p.m. Brookline from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m. Jefferson from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m. Magee from 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Ormsby from noon till 8 p.m. Paulson from noon to 8 p.m. Phillips from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. Warrington from 9:30 a.m. till 7 p.m. West Penn from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m.

West Penn Recreation Center also will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m., and Phillips Recreation Center will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. till noon.
