Pittsburgh opening cooling centers Thursday, Friday

Pittsburgh is opening cooling centers Thursday and Friday as temperatures are expected to reach about 90 degrees.

The cooling centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Beechview Healthy Active Living Community Center, 1555 Broadway Ave.
  • Brighton Heights Healthy Active Living Community Center, 3515 McClure Ave.
  • Greenfield Healthy Active Living Community Center, 745 Greenfield Ave.
  • Homewood Healthy Active Living Community Center, 7321 Frankstown Road.
  • Sheraden Healthy Active Living Community Center, 720 Sherwood Ave.
  • South Side Market House Healthy Active Living Community Center, 12th & Bingham streets.

Several CitiParks Recreation Centers also will be open:

  • Ammon at 2217 Bedford Ave., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Arlington at 2201 Salisbury St., from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Brookline at 1400 Oakridge St., from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Jefferson at 605 Redknap St., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Magee at 745 Greenfield Ave., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Ormsby at 79 S. 22nd St., from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Paulson at 1201 Paulson Ave., from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Phillips at 201 Parker St., from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Warrington at 329 Warrington Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • West Penn at 450 30th St., from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The city will typically open cooling centers when temperatures are predicted at or above 90 degrees.

The National Weather Service predicted there’s a 66% chance Pittsburgh will see temperatures at or above 90 degrees on Friday.

Pittsburgh Public Schools temporarily closed 40 schools Thursday and Friday because of the high temperatures. Students in those schools will learn remotely on those days.
