An Allegheny County judge sentenced a Pittsburgh man to 1 to 7 years in prison in connection with a 2021 drunken driving crash on Pittsburgh’s South Side in which three injured women had to be cut from a vehicle.

In addition to being sentenced on a DUI charge, Andre Perkins, 26, received 6 to 12 months for an aggravated assault by vehicle charge and 6 to 12 months for being involved in an accident involving death or injury while not licensed, court records show.

Perkins previously pleaded guilty to the three charges, court records show. The DUI charge — Perkins’ third — was for a blood-alcohol reading more than twice the legal limit.

Several charges, including one for trying to flee the scene of the accident, were withdrawn.

Perkins drove a car into oncoming traffic shortly before 3 a.m. on July 16, 2021 and struck an SUV head-on near East Carson and 10th streets, Pittsburgh police said.

Perkins began walking away from the scene and ignored orders to stop, police said. An officer tackled Perkins and handcuffed him, according to a criminal complaint.

The three women, who police did not identify, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police had no update on the women or their injuries. Perkins also was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Public defender Bobby Joe Chambers Jr., who represents Perkins, was not available for comment.
