2 injured in 4th shooting of summer at McKees Rocks apartment complex
Two people were injured in a shooting at the Hays Manor apartment complex on Bell Avenue in McKees Rocks just after midnight Thursday, according to Allegheny County police.
It was the second shooting near that apartment complex this week and the fourth this summer.
A 23-year-old man was riding his bike and 16-year-old girl was walking down the street when an unknown man started shooting at them, police said.
The 23-year-old was shot in the left leg. The girl was shot three times, in the right ankle and both thighs.
Police believe the man was the intended target.
The injured man was taken to the hospital by a passerby. The girl was taken by ambulance. Both are in stable condition.
Police don’t know the identity or motive of the shooter but believe the incident may be related to the other shooting near the apartment complex this week.
On Tuesday night, two boys, ages 8 and 17, were shot on Locust Street, suffering non-life threatening injuries. The younger boy was grazed by a stray bullet.
Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call Allegheny County Police at 1-833-255-8477.
The shootings this week were the third and fourth near Hays Manor this summer.
On July 27, a 27-year-old man and 17-year-old boy were shot at Hays Manor, suffering non life-threatening injuries.
On July 31, a man was shot near the apartment complex and sought help at the borough fire station before being transported to the hospital.
Hays Manor is owned and operated by the Allegheny County Housing Authority. The complex has 14 buildings with 138 apartments.
Mike Vogel, chief of the housing authority’s police department, said he will spend Friday at Hays Manor conducting patrols and helping the county police department with its investigation.
“We’re very concerned,” he said. “The safety of our residents is of the utmost importance.”
The apartment complex is one of only two housing authority properties with a dedicated police substation.
“I have more presence there than I have at any of our 40 developments across Allegheny County,” Vogel said.
Police have security footage of Thursday’s shooting, but have not been able to identify the shooter, Vogel said.
