Protesters in Pittsburgh demonstrate following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, on Saturday, May 30, 2020.

Forty-five adults and one juvenile were arrested Saturday after violence overtook peaceful protests in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The protests were one of many across the country meant to draw attention to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. Video shows at least one Minneapolis police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he lay handcuffed on the ground, asking for help and indicating he could not breathe.

Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said via Twitter that 60 businesses and other properties were damaged in the melee Saturday, including hotels and restaurants. Officials indicated that police will continue reviewing video footage to “identify and arrest people who instigated violence — clearly against the wishes of peaceful protesters.”

Mayor Bill Peduto later pegged the businesses affected at 71.

Sixteen of those arrested live within Pittsburgh, officials said, and others come from Allegheny and surrounding counties.

“We understand that emotions are running high,” officials wrote. “We will do everything we can to support peaceful protests. And we urge everyone: Be calm, be safe, be Pittsburghers. We will get through this together.”

The following individuals were charged with disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. Police provided only their names, and most online court records list only ZIP codes for addresses. Police did not identify the child who was arrested.
