River City Brass director honored with 'Dr. James Gourlay Day'

Recognizing James Gourlay’s 10th season as River City Brass artistic and general director, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is declaring Sept. 5 as “Dr. James Gourlay Day.”

Sept. 5 is opening day for River City Brass’s new season.

A copy of the proclamation notes Gourlay’s expansion of the band’s audience and repertoire, his “expertise,” his “wit and energy,” and calls Gourlay one of Pittsburgh’s “cultural icons.”

“I feel deeply honored by this award, which recognizes not only my own contribution to the arts in Pittsburgh, but most importantly, that of the entire River City Brass family,” Gourlay says.

“Having completed a decade as Music Director of the world’s only full-time professional brass band, performing in America’s most livable city, I’m looking forward to the next 10 years,” he adds.

Gourlay, a native of Scotland, moved to Pittsburgh with his wife, Lea Havis, to direct River City Brass in 2009. The couple became American citizens in 2018.

According to River City Brass officials, Gourlay’s tenure has led to growth, increased stability and donor base.

Since 1981, the River City Brass has become part of Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape, performing a 35-concert, five-location regional concert series each year. Its music includes a blend of American tunes, classic rock, Big Band swing and jazz, music from Broadway and Hollywood, classical and contemporary masterworks and traditional marches.
