The girlfriend of the man who owned the emaciated dog found last week tied to a dumpster at an apartment complex in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood is charged with animal neglect and cruelty in connection with the incident.
The dog, a female pit bull/boxer mix, is named Remy and was found at 7:50 a.m. Dec. 4 tied to the dumpster. A dog cage filled with feces was on top of the dumpster and Remy was thin and scared when it was picked up by police and taken to Humane Animal Rescue, according to police.
Other people who live in the complex told police where the owners of the dog lived.
Jwanna Martin, 49, told police her boyfriend brought the dog home about two months ago, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday against her.
Remy didn’t get along with Martin’s dog and their landlord and family had asked them to get rid of the dog, Martin told police, according to the complaint.
Martin and her boyfriend argued Dec. 3. She told police he left with the dog. He told police he had left the dog in the cage and during a subsequent interview, Martin admitted to abandoning the dog, according to the complaint.
Temperatures were just above freezing when the dog was outside, police said in the complaint.
Martin is charged with two counts of cruelty to animals and three counts of neglect. She was mailed a summons to answer to the charges.
