The University of Pittsburgh will focus on public service at its commencement ceremonies in late April.

The Pitt’s Oakland campus will host Dereck Hogan, U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, as its keynote speaker at undergraduate commencement ceremonies at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Petersen Events Center, university officials announced Monday.

Hogan, a 1995 graduate of Pitt, began his service as an American diplomat in 1997 and became one of the U.S. Department of State’s experts on Eastern Europe following five Foreign Service tours in Eastern Europe and Russia. He was named ambassador to the Eastern European Republic of Moldova in 2018.

The ambassador studied politics, philosophy and economics through Pitt’s University Honors College and earned a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University.

Pitt officials said Allegheny County Executive Richard Fitzgerald will be commencement speaker at graduate commencement ceremonies at 6:30 p.m Thursday, April 25, at the Petersen Events Center.

Fitzgerald, who is serving his second term as county executive, was elected to the inaugural County Council in 1999 representing District 11, which included Pittsburgh neighborhoods and other municipalities.
