As part of a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami, the Food Podcast spoke with current and former NFL players about food insecurity.

In this week’s podcast, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Brian Gulish spoke with Moon graduate and Arizona Cardinals center A.Q. Shipley about his involvement with the Taste of the NFL event and get his thoughts on hunger and food insecurity among children in the country.

“With all the resources we have, I think it’s absolutely criminal to think that in this country children don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” Shipley said. “I think every single person, no matter where you come from, no matter what you do, deserves to have a meal.”

This year, as part of the NFL’s kick hunger initiative, the Cardinals raised more than $80,000 for the food bank in Phoenix.

Gulish also spoke to 1997 Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson, who said he knew people growing up who struggled with food insecurity — including his family.

“Growing up, there were times where you didn’t know,” Woodson said. “My mother and my brother and my sister, we would sit around sometimes, and my mom had to try to figure out where it was going to come from.

“A lot of times it would be friends from church, or somebody in the neighborhood who knew we were struggling a little bit and helped out. Everyone needs a little helping hand at some point, so this is great to be a part of.”
