The City of Duquesne Police Department is asking residents to keep an eye out for fake cash that is being passed around in the Pittsburgh area, according to a Facebook post by the department Saturday.
The post describes fake bills that have the word “replica” printed below the serial number and other words printed in a language other than English.
“If you are a business owner or deal in cash, please check the money closely,” the post said.
Duquesne Police noted that pens that detect counterfeit or replica bills could be helpful, but still urged residents to examine the words on the bill closely.
Replica bills can be purchased online and are legal to own. However, attempting to offer the bills as legitimate currency is a crime, the post said.
Duquesne Police could not be reached by phone for further details Sunday.
