A Pittsburgh man was injured when his SUV went over a steep hillside along the Parkway East early Monday morning.

The incident occurred just after 6:30 a.m. at mile-marker 80.7, which is between the Business US-22 and Rodi Road exits.

State police said Lamonte Lewis, 58, was driving eastbound in the center lane when his vehicle slid from the center lane, across the right lane and onto the right shoulder. His SUV struck a guard rail and pole before plummeting 300 feet down over a hillside.

The SUV landed upright at the bottom of the hill, and Lewis was able to get himself out of the vehicle, police said. Firefighters found him lying next to the SUV.

Firefighters and medics used a rope device to pull Lewis back up to the road. He was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville for treatment of serious injuries.

Police interviewed Lewis at the hospital and said the investigation is ongoing.
