A Coraopolis man who tried to skirt four years of payroll taxes he owed to the IRS will spend two years behind bars, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

Amarender Tiparthy, 50, owner of a software and IT consulting firm, also must pay restitution in the amount of $2.28 million — the same amount he failed to pay the IRS, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said.

Tiparthy collected payroll taxes from employees assigned to IT projects from 2010 through 2013, but he failed to “truthfully account for and pay over the taxes” when they were due to the IRS, prosecutors said.

He pleaded guilty to four felony tax counts in October.

U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose imposed the 24-month prison sentence followed by a year of probation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary McKeen Houghton prosecuted the case with help from the Criminal Investigation section of the IRS.
