An Erie man was taken to the Allegheny County Jail on aggravated assault charges after being arrested for striking a police officer with his car Friday during Light Up Night in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Adam J. Martin, 31, was charged by the sheriff’s department with aggravated assault, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and driving under the influence, according to court dockets.
An Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department deputy was working a traffic control post for Light Up Night around 7:30 p.m. when Martin stopped his car at the intersection of Duquesne Boulevard and Stanwix Street to ask for directions, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI.
The deputy told Martin to pull over to the side out of the flow of traffic, the station reported, citing court documents.
When Martin moved forward, the deputy reported he saw a passenger in the car try to hand Martin a bottle of vodka. As Martin passed the deputy, he swerved, hitting him in the knee.
Police said in court documents Martin didn’t stop, so the deputy chased him through the intersection before he stopped.
Once he stopped, police took Martin into custody.
Martin was taken to the county jail after immediately being unable to post $5,000 bail.
