The Allegheny County Health Department.

Bruegger’s Bagel Bakery on Forbes Avenue in Oakland reopened following an inspection by the Allegheny County Health Department earlier this week.

The restaurant was closed after a health department inspection Aug. 9 found raw sewage backed up in the basement of the restaurant, grimy floors, overhead leaks and water damage in the kitchen area, according to the inspection report.

The restaurant was also cited for failing to keep cream cheese, tomatoes and other cold food items at the appropriate temperatures, and inspectors observed a black residue on shelving areas where bagels were stored, the report said.

Inspectors ordered management to replace flooring throughout the kitchen and dining areas, repair the ceiling in the kitchen and dining areas and to sanitize food contact surfaces and equipment.

The facility was reinspected Aug. 13, according to reports filed with the health department.

Improvements to refrigerating cold foods, cleaning food prep areas and disposing of waste water were deemed “satisfactory,” the report said.

In addition, wall and ceiling leaks have been repaired and new carpet was ordered, according to the report.
