More than 100 people gathered Friday in Pittsburgh to kick off Wear Orange Weekend, a national gun violence awareness effort.

The gathering began in Allegheny Commons Park on Pittsburgh’s North Side and concluded with a peace march.

Rabbi Jonathan Perlman of New Light Congregation was among the featured speakers.Perlman was inside the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill when a gunman opened fire on Oct. 27, 2018, killing 11 people during worship services.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and U.S. Rep. Summer Lee attended.

The “Wear Orange Weekend” in Pittsburgh is one of several similar events happening across the country this weekend intended to kick off June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month.

Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence, CeaseFirePA and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted the Pittsburgh event.
