Allegheny County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Norman Vire, 49, of Penn Hills, on Tuesday.

A Penn Hills man who police say opened fire on a family member in a Giant Eagle parking lot has been arrested, Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus said Tuesday.

Norman Vire, 49, was arrested by sheriff’s detectives in connection with the Dec. 5, 2021, shooting and taken to Allegheny County Jail. A bench warrant had been issued for Vire after a county judge ruled that he had violated terms of his bond.

Vire faces charges including aggravated assault, criminal mischief, making terroristic threats and firearms charges.

Sheriff’s detectives learned that Vire had been staying in a Duff Road home in Penn Hills. When detectives arrived at the residence Tuesday, Vire surrendered without incident, Kraus said.

Vire previously was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison on firearms charges for his role in a December 1998 home invasion, court records show. He served 10 years in prison and was released Dec. 30, 2018, according to a state Department of Corrections spokesperson.

Vire also served for two years on an aggravated assault charge, the Department of Corrections spokesperson said. That sentence ended on March 16, 1998.
