A man was taken to a hospital after a head-on crash with a Penn Hills police SUV Sunday morning, authorities said.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on Saltsburg Road near Rosedale Street, an Allegheny County 911 supervisor said.

Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton said the officer was on routine patrol in an SUV traveling west on Saltsburg Road when the other vehicle, traveling east, came around a bend in the road and swerved into the police vehicle’s lane.

The vehicles collided head-on, at an angle, and both had to be towed, Rosedale fire Chief Dave Sanford said.

Burton said the officer was not hurt. “He felt fine and is finishing his shift,” he said. “He continued to work.”

Burton said the other driver, 40, complained of chest pain, which he did not if was due to the vehicle’s air bag deploying or if the man had a medical issue.

It was not known if snowy weather conditions contributed to or caused the collision, which Burton said was under investigation. He did not know if any charges would be filed.
