Property appeal education forum

Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor will host a community town hall to share information and resources with residents on the property appeals process. The event is slated for 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Penn Hills Library.

Toy drive begins Oct. 1

Lower Valley Athletic Foundation Christmas Toy Drive begins Oct. 1 and ends the first week of December.

There will be donation boxes at Inner Groove Brewing and the Verona borough building, both along East Railroad Avenue. Organizers are looking for new, unopened toys for children of all ages. Toy distribution is expected a week before Christmas. The foundation will reach out to local schools and churches to find families in need. Dungeons and Dragons

Lower Valley Athletic Foundation will host an interactive Dungeons and Dragons event 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Verona Fire Hall, 465 Parker St. Participants are encouraged to dress up as medieval characters. They will go through a story will live actors. Cost is $30 per player. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Deadline to register is Oct. 16. Attendees can sign up through the LVAF Facebook page.

Penn Hills 50th reunion

Penn Hills High School’s Class of 1973 will celebrate its 50-year reunion from 5 to 11 p.m. Oct. 6, 2023, at Futules Harmar House in Harmarville. Classmates should email Joanna Papa Ogden at joanneogden@comcast.net or Connie Hall Hannan at con.hannan@gmail.com with their current email and contact information.

Ladies Society

Plum Area Ladies Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Plum Community Center, 499 Center New Texas Road. Mark Serrao, owner of Oakmont Bakery, will speak to the group about the history of the bakery. Annual dues of $25 may be paid.

There will be two service projects this month. The first will be to fill the distributed totes with comfort items for patients while undergoing chemotherapy. Suggested items are cookies, crackers, word puzzle books, coloring books for adults, colored pencils, journals (notebooks), pens, unscented hand cream and magazines. The second service project is to bring in snacks and other items to fill Christmas stockings for soldiers overseas thru Military Connections. Suggested items are granola bars, energy bars, mints, gum, Pop-Tarts, lollipops, Skittles, Starburst, Rice Krispie Treats, trail mix, fruit snacks, bags of nuts, single-serve powdered Gatorade, Slim Jims, small bags of cookies, crackers, pretzels, chocolate candy and other snacks. Paper products for the Food Pantry will also be collected.

For Ladies Day Out, PALS members will celebrate Octoberfest at the Golden Goblet on Oct.22 with dinner and drinks. Sign up will be at the meeting.

Plum Area Ladies Society is a service/social club open to women from Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville, Murrysville, and surrounding communities. Newcomers are always welcome at meetings, held at 6:30 on the first Wednesday of the month, September through April at Plum Community Center. For more information, call Mary Lou at 724-327-8265.
