After nearly five years of serving diners breakfast, coffee, fresh-baked bread, and inventive brunch and take-out items, Bitter Ends will close in April.

The popular spot took over the former Bloomfield Sandwich Shop location in 2017, and quickly built a passionate fan base. Bitter Ends focused on hearth-baked bread and farm-to-table ingredients, which it sourced from its own small farm in Verona.

Chef/owner Becca Hegarty wrote on Instagram that she is extremely grateful for everyone that supported the restaurant and proud of her staff, but added that it is “time to move on.” Bitter Ends last day will be April 20.

“We opened 4.5 years ago with a ½-acre garden, speeding into a small brick and mortar establishment to show my mother the vision before she died,” wrote Hegarty in a post on Monday. “I am endlessly proud of Bitter Ends — with the help of some absolutely astonishing people we have accomplished everything we have set out to do.”

Like many restaurants, Bitter Ends closed down temporarily during the pandemic. But it adjusted and provided baked goods and other items to other Bloomfield establishments, like Linea Verde Green Market on Liberty Avenue.

When restaurants started reopening, Bitter Ends began providing take-out orders on select nights, and hosted pop-up kitchens at its space. Eventually it extended hours and operated as a take-out only restaurant, to much fanfare. Its fish fry gatherings, for example, regularly attracted lines down the block on Liberty Avenue.

Hegarty earned accolades during her time at the helm of Bitter Ends, including multiple James Beard Award Rising Star Chef semifinalist nominations.

Her creative takes on meals sourced with local ingredients will continue all the way up until Bitter Ends final day. The last fish fry will be held on April 15, the last brunch service will be on April 18, and on April 20, Bitter Ends will be hosting a “Clownburger” event for its final day, serving up all beef patties and sides.

Bitter Ends will be closed between April 1-4, but will reopen April 8 for two more weeks of service. It is located at 4613 Liberty Ave. in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.
