Two people were taken to a hospital Friday morning following a head-on crash involving a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus and a pickup in Penn Hills.
According to Adam Brandolph, deputy chief communications officer of Pittsburgh Regional Transit, the crash happened near the intersection of Frankstown Road and Coral Drive. He said initial reports indicate the pickup drove into oncoming traffic and struck the bus head-on.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 a.m., according to a social media post from the Penn Hills No. 7 Volunteer Fire Company.
The fire company said both drivers of the vehicles were trapped when they arrived on the scene. The driver of the pickup was unconscious.
Both drivers were taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Oakland, Brandolph said. The pickup driver was listed in critical condition and had regained conciousness by the time they were transported. The bus driver was in serious condition.
The bus had one passenger at the time of the crash. The passenger reportedly refused medical attention. When authorities later contacted the passenger, they claimed to have a leg injury. There is no update whether the passenger is being treated for it.
Frankstown Road was closed for about three hours.
Penn Hills police Sgt. Gary Renko said Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s police department will be handling the investigation.
