One person died in a house fire on Graham Boulevard in Churchill on June 19, 2022.

A man killed over the weekend in a Churchill house fire has been identified.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as Munang Nanji, 70.

Crews responded Sunday to a house fire on the 800 block of Graham Boulevard around 12:40 p.m. Flames broke through the roof of the single-family home, and the fire reached three alarms before the flames were put under control.

Fire departments from Monroeville, Wilkins, Edgewood, Forest Hills and Turtle Creek were all eventually on scene near Greensburg Pike.

According to emergency alerts, some parts of the home collapsed during the fire.

Churchill fire chief Ralph Zatlin told Tribune-Review reporting partner WPXI that heavy flames meant that crews were unable to push into the home during the blaze. He said other occupants were able to escape the fire.

“We had to back out and we had a good defensive,” said Zatlin.

WPXI reported that authorities believe that the fire started at the back of the house, but investigators are still working to confirm the cause of the fire.

“A search was attempted multiple times which were unsuccessful due to heavy fire conditions inside with multiple floors collapsed,” the Churchill Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company wrote on Facebook. “Crews also battled with water supply issues, limiting the flow of the hose lines. The fire extended throughout the entire structure. Crews worked for over 2 hours before getting control of the fire.”
