Norwin area: Senior citizens dinner, senior softball league sign-up, trivia night, Easter discussion

Norwin students plan dinner for senior citizens

Senior citizens living in North Huntingdon, Irwin and North Irwin will be able to enjoy a meal and entertainment at the annual Senior Citizens Dinner from 1 to 3 p.m. April 23 at the Norwin High School, 251 McMahon Drive, North Huntingdon.

The Norwin Student Council is sponsoring the free dinner as a way to thanking the community’s senior citizens for their wisdom and help in giving direction to the younger generation.

The Norwin Show Choir and Select Orchestra will provide entertainment. There also will be a door prize raffle featuring more than 60 prizes.

Norwin residents age 55 and older can attend by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope with their name and address to: Norwin High School Student Council, 251 McMahon Dr., North Huntingdon, Pa. 15642; Attn: Patrick McLaughlin, Senior Citizen’s Dinner. Tickets will be mailed to the recipients and are to be presented upon entry to the event.

Tickets will be available on a first-come first-serve basis, until 600 tickets are distributed. The deadline for making reservations is April 10.

Those who want to attend can request a maximum of two tickets and are asked to state whether they want one or two tickets. Tickets can not be requested through a phone call.

Senior league softball sign-up set

Men and woman age 55 and older who still like to play softball can test their skills with the Norwin Senior Softball league this season.

The sign-up for the senior softball league will be from 9 to 11 a.m. March 22 at the Norwin PAL Fields off Bridge Street in Shafton, North Huntingdon.

The registration fee is $20, which will cover the cost of a team shirt and hat. Registrants are encouraged to make a voluntary donation to the Westmoreland County Food Bank during registration.

The games are played from April through mid-September on Wednesday mornings at the Norwin PAL Fields.

Discussion of Jesus and Easter planned

The questions surrounding Jesus and the resurrection will be the focal point of a program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 29 at the Norwin Public Library community room, Caruthers Lane, Irwin.

The program, “Who is the Jesus of Easter? A Historic and Personal Consideration of the Resurrection” will be conducted by the Calvin Presbyterian Church at 260 Maus Drive, North Huntingdon.

A complimentary meal with refreshments is planned from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a discussion led by the Rev. Aaron Garber. An open dialogue is planned for 7 to 7:30 p.m.

There is no need to RSVP the church.

Trivia Night planned for library

Those who like trivia can test their knowledge with 50 questions during Trivia Night at the Norwin Public Library, Caruthers Lane, Irwin, at 6:30 p.m. March 21.

This will be a competition with teams of four-to-five people. Contestants can create their team or library representatives will create one of the contestants.

The program is free, but registration is requested. Contact the library at 724-863-4700, ext. 3 or visit www.norwinpubliclibrary.net to register.

Irwin councilman recognized

Irwin Councilman Tyler Baum has been selected by the Pittsburgh Business Times and Leadership Pittsburgh as a member of its 2023 “30 Under 30” list of young business and community leaders throughout Western Pennsylvania.

Baum is a private equity associate at Continuim Equity Partners in Pittsburgh, a private equity firm that focuses on acquiring manufacturing and industrial companies. He previously worked at U.S. Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh. Baum is a Norwin graduate and a graduate of Dartmouth College, with a degree in government and public policy.

In November 2021, Baum was the youngest person to be elected to Irwin’s borough council. On council, he has spearheaded the borough’s junior council program that is teaching two Norwin High School students about municipal government. He has worked on regional efforts, including helping to organize a townhall meeting with North Huntingdon Commissioner Virginia Stump and Trafford Borough Council President Kris Cardiff to discuss transportation and infrastructure needs at 6 p.m. April 3 at the Norwin Public Library, Caruthers Lane, Irwin.

He also is a lieutenant in the Irwin Volunteer Fire Department.
