Chamber to hold Oktoberfest

There will be music, German food, raffle prizes and a beer stein holding contest at the Norwin Chamber of Commerce’s Oktoberfest fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 29 at Quinn Brewing, 300 Commerce Loop, Banco Industrial Park, North Huntingdon.

The chamber is asking for a $25 donation, which gives ticket holders one beer, light German food and a raffle ticket.

Fall craft, vendor show slated

More than 100 vendors, a large basket raffle and a concession stand will be part of the craft and vendor show sponsored by the Norwin Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Norwin High School, Mockingbird Drive, North Huntingdon.

Those attending should enter through the auditorium entrance.

Extra tickets for a door prize are available to those attending the event by bringing a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.

Irwin church plans Oktoberfest

Food, games for adults and children and music will be featured at the Oktoberfest event beginning at 11:30 Oct. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church at Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Irwin.

Benefit car cruise planned

Pet Friends Inc. of Irwin will hold a Save-a-Pet car cruise from 2 p.m. until dusk Oct. 1 at Quinn Brewing, 300 Commerce Loop, Banco Industrial Park, North Huntingdon.

Registration is $5. Trophies will be awarded for the top 10 cars and dash plaques will be available for the first 100 entries.

Those involved are asked to donate a can or bag of dog or cat food for a chance to win lottery tickets.

Food trucks and craft vendors will be available. A raffle and auction will be held.

Irwin hires police officer

Irwin has a new police officer, pending required pre-employment testing.

Irwin council authorized Chief Dan Wensel on Sept. 14 to hire Justin Woods, 28, of North Huntingdon, as a full-time police officer at a rate of $25.62 an hour. The rate is set in the borough’s contract with the Irwin Police Officers’ Relief Association.

Norwin library programs

Historic interpreter Ken Serfass will portray Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and discuss his life and times during the Civil War and friendship with President Lincoln during a program at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Norwin Public Library, Caruthers Lane, Irwin.

In another free program, Mike Pochan of Irwin, a lifelong comic book collector, will present “A History of the Marvel Comic Universe: How it became the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the library.

Pochan will discuss how Marvel comic books became the cinematic blockbusters loved by millions. Those attending can dress as their favorite Marvel superhero.

Police get AED from Excela

Excela Health’s Westmoreland/Frick Hospital Foundation has provided the North Huntingdon police department with an automated external defibrillator.

This AED will be placed in the shift supervisor’s vehicle to provide the most rapid response to a person with an emergency situation to ensure a greater chance of survival.

An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. It is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest re-establish a normal heart rhythm.
