Library to hold canning class

The basics of canning foodwill be explored in a program at 6 p.m. July 5 at the Norwin Public Library, 100 Caruthers Lane, Irwin.

Ginny Fitzner, volunteer master food preserver with Penn State Extension Service, will lead the one-hour canning class, which provides an introduction to pressure and water bath canning, as well as canning equipment, techniques, storage, and food safety.

Irwin employees recognized

Irwin Borough recently recognized employees for their service to the community, providing them with a plaque.

The borough gave the awards in one-year, then five-year increments. Some employees who have worked for the borough for more than a year, but less than five years, did get a plaque for one years’s service, said Katelind Sartori, borough assistant manager.

Randy Altman, public works director, was recognized for 35 years of work for Irwin, followed by Chief Dan Wensel and Lt. Mike Thomas, who were recognized with 20-year service plaques.

Michael Brady, a public works employee, was recognized for 10 years of service. Zachary Kansler, borough solicitor; Shari Martino, borough manager; and Officer Eric Ziska, were all recognized for five years of service.

The following employees were recognized with one-year service plaques: Sartori and Ralph DiBridge, parking enforcement officer; Matthew Sever, code enforcement officer/public works employee; and police officers Alexander Gillingham, Stephen Novotnak and Justin Woods.

Manor Lions to sell barbecue chicken

The Manor Lions Club will sell a one-half barbecue chicken meal beginning at 11 .m. July 8 at Roberts Roofing parking lot, 89 Manor-Harrison City Road, Manor.

The sale will continue until all meals are sold.

The chicken dinner will costs $10 and will include a roll, applesauce, cookies and a drink.

Proceeds will benefit local charities and ones throughout the world.
