Unwanted medications being collected

North Huntingdon police are taking unwanted and old medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at the lobby of the station, 12279 Center Highway, as part of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency’s Drug Take Back Program.

Unwanted medications, old pills and capsules and liquids in sealed containers can be placed in a drop-off box at the department, Det. Tom Harris said. The police will not take any EpiPens or hypodermic needles, Harris said.

Township police have been participating in the DEA program for about 10 years, Harris said.

Irwin seeks crossing guard

Irwin is seeking to hire a part-time crossing guard at a rate of $9.85 per hour.

Council on Oct. 14 authorized advertising for applicants for the job after Katherine Montrose resigned.

St. Stephen’s to sell pirohi

St. Stephen’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 90 Bethel Road, North Huntingdon, will sell potato cheese and lekvar pirohi for $10 a dozen on Nov. 6, beginning at 10 a.m. in the church hall.

Masks and social distancing will be required.

Norwin gets covid-19 grant

Norwin has been awarded $319,000 from the state Commission on Crime and Delinquency to buy 1,080 iPads and supplies to sanitize and clean the school facilities under the “Technology to Guarantee Distance Learning.”

The grant, which is from the state’s allocation of the federal CARES Act funding that Congress approved in March, is for covid-19 related expenses from March 1 to Oct. 30.

Senior citizens donate cleaning supplies

The West Hempfield Senior Citizens donated disposable cups, sanitizers and cleaning supplies to the West Hempfield Elementary School.

The senior citizens, who gather to play cards, meet at the West Hempfield Presbyterian Church in Hempfield.

Irwin to seek covid-19 funds

Irwin Borough intends to apply for money to cover costs related to the covid-19 pandemic.

Council authorized Shari Martino, borough manager, to apply for the money from the Westmoreland Cares municipal grant program. Martino said the borough will apply for about $23,000.
