The North Hills School District has delayed the rededication of Guadagnino Field because of the threat of severe weather this evening, the district announced.
A ceremony rededicating the newly renovated multiuse turf field in honor of longtime teacher and coach Gaetano “Guy” Guadagnino has been rescheduled from tonight to the same time, 6:50 p.m., on Wednesday, April 30. The first pitch will be at 7 p.m.
The baseball field, located directly across the parking lot from North Hills High School, underwent a $3.4 million renovation last year and reopened earlier this spring.
In addition to baseball, other sports including football, lacrosse and soccer, as well as the North Hills marching band, will use the field.
Guadagnino began his career in 1946 at the former West View High School and spent decades as a physical education teacher and coach in the North Hills School District.
He served as head baseball coach from 1958 to 1978, leading the Indians to 15 section championships. He also coached volleyball, golf and junior-high basketball, and spent many years as an assistant football coach.
After retiring in 1980, Guadagnino remained active in the community. The field was first named in his honor in 1995, and he was inducted into the North Hills Sports Hall of Fame the following year.
A Pittsburgh native and the son of Italian immigrants, he played baseball at the University of Pittsburgh and spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals before serving in the Army during World War II. His children attended North Hills, and his daughter-in-law was a longtime teacher at the high school.
Guadagnino died in 2002 at the age of 82.
