North Hills School District students will learn online Wednesday so that district bus drivers can attend a funeral for longtime colleague Nancy Von Vreckin.
A notice posted to the district’s website said Von Vreckin drove for the district more than 40 years.
“Many of her closest friends were also her colleagues and are current bus drivers for the district,” the memo read.
The district’s transportation contractor, ABC Transit, said 15 buses would be unavailable for afternoon runs on Wednesday because of the funeral.
That would leave more than 2,700 students without transportation, district leaders said.
The district can use up to five flexible instruction days (FID), as approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Student classwork will be provided through Google Classroom. Students will work on their own schedule.
Teachers and staff are expected to prepare students during the day Tuesday for their upcoming assignments.
“This planned FID will also prepare our students and staff for any future flexible instructional days needed as a result of winter weather or other unplanned building closure,” school leaders said.
A.W. Beattie Career Center will be open Wednesday but students have to have their own ride.
