North Allegheny School District staff, families and students 16 and older have until noon Saturday to sign up for a covid-19 vaccination at the high school early next week.
The district is partnering with UPMC to host the voluntary vaccination clinic in the cafeteria of the senior high school starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, to administer the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
The second dose will be administered on June 8 beginning at 3 p.m.
People who receive the vaccine will be required to stay at the clinic for 15 minutes after being inoculated to monitor for any adverse reactions.
The registration form, which is due by noon on Saturday, May 15, is available online.
Parents and guardians of registered students also must complete and return a consent form before May 18 to get the vaccine.
UPMC is booking appointment to receive the vaccine online.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent when they get vaccinated.
U.S. health advisers endorsed use of Pfizer’s covid-19 vaccine in kids as young as 12 on Wednesday, as expected.
Pfizer is not the only company seeking to lower the age limit for its vaccine. Moderna recently said preliminary results from its study in 12- to 17-year-olds show strong protection and no serious side effects, data that the FDA will need to scrutinize.
As for even younger children, both companies have begun tests in youngsters ages 6 months to 11 years.
Those studies explore if different doses are needed at the youngest ages, and FDA plans to hold a public meeting next month to debate exactly what evidence is needed.
