Northland Public Library is embarking on a construction and renovation project.
Features of the “New Northland” include a two-story building extension, new lower-level entrance, increased accessibility, an open lower lobby and service areas, a renovated layout and extended social spaces. And the spiral staircase will be removed.

Upcoming programs at the library, 300 Cumberland Road, McCandless, include:
• Great Courses: “The Real History of Dracula,” 7 p.m. Oct. 7, 14 and 21 in the library board room.
Join Northland staff members to watch and discuss episodes from the series. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Registration is required for each session.
• Terrifying Tales by the Fire, 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in the learning garden.
Local author Thomas White will share some terrifying local stories, and participants are invited to share theirs. Have a creepy story but don’t want to tell it yourself? Email it to colemank2@northlandlibrary.net.
Snacks and beverages will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Registration is required.
• Craft Night: Paper Book Pumpkins, 6 p.m. Oct. 28.
Make a fall pumpkin using discarded paperback books. All supplies will be provided.
Registration is $5 for the hands-on craft. You can sign up starting Oct. 1 at the Ask a Librarian desk on the second floor of the library.
Children, ’tweens and teens
• 4-H Informational Program, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9.
Whether your interest is animals, art, sports, or computers, 4-H has something for youngsters. Those ages 5 to 15 and their families are invited to drop by and get information on various activities, clubs and meet-ups. No registration is required.
Ongoing programs and activities include:
• Cookbook Club, 6 to 8 p.m. the first Monday of each month.
Home cooks of any skill level explore dishes from various cookbooks. Participants can make a dish related to the month’s theme to bring to share. Contact summersk@northlandlibrary.org with questions or to join the group’s email list.
Themes are Fall Festival, Oct. 7; Presidential Favorites, Nov. 4; and Casseroles and Cookies, Dec. 2.
• Booked for Lunch, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Friday of each month.

• Mystery Lovers Book Group, 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month.
Books are “Just Another Missing Person” by Gilliam McAllister, Oct. 17, and “The Last One” by Will Dean, Nov. 21.
• Teen Time, 3:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month, for participants ages 12 to 18. No registration is required.
• Lab Mice, 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Nov. 11, a STEAM-based hands-on story time for children ages 3 to 6. Each week features a story, discussion about it and a related activity. Registration is required for the five-week series.
• Crafting With Ms. Kim, 10 to 11 a.m. October 10, 17, 24 and 31.
Preschool children ages 3 to 6 are welcome to drop in for a cute, quick 5-minute craft to take home. Children will rotate in and out of the library’s new small group meeting room space during the program. No registration is required.
