The Longvue Acres Garden Club is playing host to its 72nd annual spring perennial plant sale, featuring more than 500 plants grown by members and donated for sale.

The cash-only plant sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on May 14 — rain or shine — in the upper parking lot of Northmont United Presbyterian Church, 8169 Perry Highway in McCandless.

Several club members are Penn State Master Gardeners and will be on hand to answer gardening questions and help with selecting plants.

Money raised from the sale finances monthly educational programs for the public and supports the maintenance of the chapel garden at UPMC Passavant Hospital.

Proceeds also are used to support the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the Botanic Gardens of Western Pennsylvania, the North Area Environmental Council and community gardens in McCandless and Ross.

The Longvue Acres Garden Club was formed in the fall of 1950, when construction of the Longvue Acres Plan 3, located off Peebles Road in McCandless, brought many new homes to the booming area.

But the new housing plan lacked greenery, garden club officer Claudia Hickly told the Tribune-Review when the organization marked its 65th anniversary in 2015.

To beautify the neighborhood, women living on Hazlett Road, Bingay Drive and Balmoral Drive organized the garden club.

They held front-yard beauty contests to encourage residents to spruce up their properties and awarded money to homeowners who planted the most attractive landscaping.

Hickly said the group even created a jingle: ‘Lend a hand, Do your share, Let’s have beauty everywhere.”
