Allegheny County Police are investigating a Monday morning incident involving a bus driver and two students who attend independent schools but live within the Hampton Township School District, officials said.
County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said on Tuesday that the bus driver, whose name was not released, “suffered a medical emergency while transporting two students.” A school official said the man drove the two students to an office park.
“The students were unharmed,” Joseph added. “The bus driver was transported to an area hospital by ambulance in stable condition.”
Joseph did not name the two students.
The bus driver is an employee of Monark Student Transportation Corp., a company that Hampton Township School District uses to transport some students, school officials said in a statement from the district.
“We have learned that the bus driver picked up two students to go to their independent school but did not pick up any other students and did not take them to school, but rather to a business park,” school officials said.
School officials said the driver “suffered a medical situation while on his route” and “eventually pulled over and sought assistance.”
This same driver also provides transportation to some Central Elementary School students, they said.
“Monark informed the district about this situation, and we have been communicating with the transportation company to ensure that appropriate measures are taken,” school officials said.
“This situation is a matter of great concern, and we are actively addressing it to ensure the safety and well-being of our students,” they added. “We are reevaluating our safety procedures with all of our bus carriers and working closely with the relevant authorities and Monark to investigate the incident.”
