No injuries reported as Pittsburgh police, suspect exchange gunfire in Homewood
There were no injuries reported when a Hazelwood man exchanged gunfire with Pittsburgh police early Friday in Homewood.
Police said they responded shortly after 2:40 a.m. after they received multiple Shotspotter alerts from the 7100 block of Hamilton Avenue.
After meeting with a witness who saw the suspect firing shots, police located 36-year-old Michael Tyrone Waller of Hazelwood on Hamilton Avenue.
According to a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesman, Waller fired at police while attempting to flee, and an officer returned fire.
Medics evaluated Waller after he was taken into custody near Hamilton and North Lang avenues.
Police said one of two guns recovered following Waller’s arrest was reported stolen from Jefferson Hills in 2019.
Waller was charged with four counts each of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault and assault of a law enforcement officer, as well as charges related to the stolen gun.
He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail after being denied bail.
Allegheny County police continue to investigate.
