Grant reenactor comes to Delmont

Living historian Ken Serfass will portray former Civil War general and American president Ulysses S. Grant at 6 p.m. June 14 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Delmont.

Serfass will present a program titled, “The Friendship with William T. Sherman: The Military Friendship That Couldn’t Lose.” Sherman served under Grant during the Civil War in 1862-63, and became commanding general of the Army when Grant served as president. It is an interactive program with the audience.

There is no cost to attend, and no registration requirement.

The church is at 39 East Pittsburgh Street in Delmont.

Memorial Day events

The White Valley AMVETS and American Legions from Delmont and Murrysville will host ceremonies throughout the Star’s coverage area for the Memorial Day holiday on May 27. They will be:

• 8 a.m., Export honor roll at borough war memorial in the Washington Avenue parking lot by the Westmoreland Heritage Trail

• 8:30 a.m. ceremony at Murrysville cemetery

• 9 a.m., ceremony at Hill’s Church cemetery in Murrysville

• 9:30 a.m., ceremony at White Valley cemetery in Murrysville

• 10 a.m., ceremony at Twin Valley cemetery in Delmont

• 10:45 a.m., parade through downtown Export

• 11:30 a.m., ceremony at Grandview cemetery in Murrysville

• 12:15 p.m., honor roll at White Valley AMVETS, 2100 Carolina Street in Murrysville

‘Blessing of the Animals’

First Presbyterian Church in Avonmore will host a “Blessing of the Animals” event from 6-8 p.m. June 2 at the church, 518 Indiana Ave. in Avonmore.

There will be light refreshments and pet treats. Donations will be accepted for the Action for Animals Humane Society in Latrobe.

All pets must be leashed or in a container.

Rewind Reuse Center summer mini-camps

The Rewind Reuse Center in Export will host a series of summer mini-camps for children who have completed grades 1-6. The registration fee is $5 per child, per session. Each session will have 16 students with a waitlist.

The sessions will be:

• June 18 and 20: Nature art

• June 25 and 27: Jewelry and beads

• July 16 and 18: Sculpture and papier mache

• July 25 and 25: Wood and painting

• Aug. 6 and 8: Fabric and fiber

• Aug. 13 and 15: Collage and mosaic

Chalk art festival

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host a free June 15 chalk art festival from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Delmont Volunteer Fire Department, 2360 Route 66 in Delmont.

Featuring “The Chalking Dad” Erik Greenawalt, children and adults are invited to express their creativity. The afternoon will feature live music, food, games, prizes, face painting, raffle baskets and a bicycle rodeo for children. Participants in the rodeo can bring their own bicycle and helmet or use one provided at the event.

Heritage trail Poker Run set for next month

Westmoreland Heritage Trail officials will host their annual festival and poker run June 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Murrysville.

Each participant in the poker run will stop at five checkpoints along the trail to choose a playing card from the deck. At the end of the event, participants will have a complete poker hand, with the best hands receiving prizes for first, second and third place. This is not a race. Participants can choose an 8-mile bicycle ride or 4-mile (round-trip) walk to the checkpoints.

Registration before May 25 is $25. Day-of registration is $30. All registered participants will receive a 2024 Poker Run t-shirt. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Avenue. The poker run begins at 10 a.m. All players must return by 11:30 a.m. Awards and a raffle will follow at noon.

The afternoon will include basket raffles, food vendors, ice cream, beer and discounts for new Westmoreland Heritage Trail memberships. It will be held rain or shine.

All proceeds will go towards trail maintenance and future improvements.

Car show

Union Presbyterian Church will host a June 1 car show from 2-6 p.m. at the church, 656 Route 380 in Murrysville.

The afternoon will include music, food, raffle baskets, 50/50, baked goods sale and more. All proceeds will benefit the Veterans Homeless Parsonage in Indiana.
