Businesses in Murrysville Star area receive covid relief funds

Businesses across Murrysville, Export and Delmont received covid relief funds awarded by the county last week.

Across Westmoreland County, 260 small businesses were awarded grants totaling more than $4.3 million. Grants ranged from a few thousand dollars to a maximum of $25,000. They were funded through $31.5 million in federal funds funneled through the state as part of the government’s coronavirus relief program.

“I was down to the very last savings that I had to keep my business floating, so it really helped me,” said Dean Tortorice, owner of Dean’s Health and Fitness Center in Murrysville.

Tortorice received about $22,500 that will be used to pay rent over the next few months. He noted the business shuttered from March until June when Gov. Tom Wolf ordered all nonessential businesses to close to help curb the spread of covid-19. Now that he’s reopened, customers are required to wear masks and wipe down equipment after usage.

“I really think the people are making the difference,” Tortorice said.
