9/11 anniversary programs set for Saturday in Plum, Export

Community and veterans’ groups in Plum and Export will host programs Saturday marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

In Plum, the Pittsburgh chapter of the Professional Golfers’ Association’s Helping Our Patriots Everywhere organization will host a “Never Forget” memorial on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

It will take place at 9 a.m. at the Plum American Legion Post 980 at 7824 Saltsburg Road.

“All of the volunteer fire companies and EMS will be there, and the hook-and-ladder truck will be there with the American flag coming down,” said organizer Bob Lokar. “I’ll be reading the history of Flight 93, and then they’ll be ringing the bells, and we’ll read names of folks who died as part of the tragedy.”

The Beaver Valley Choral Society will sing the national anthem and other patriotic songs, and the Legion’s honor guard will fire a rifle salute and play taps.

Following the program, the Legion will serve a free breakfast cooked by the Sons of the American Legion, along with music by a veteran group, Jerry Coyne’s Kilroy Was Here, featuring Gene Horner on trombone.

Export observance

In Export, the Italian American Club will be joined Saturday at 1 p.m. by all five local fire departments from Murrysville, Export and Delmont as Murrysville Alliance Church Pastor Dan Lawrence emcees an anniversary program.

“Mayors from all three towns will be giving brief remarks, and the Boy Scouts will also be helping out, ringing the bells,” said Italian American Club Manager Heidi Soisson.

The program will take place at the recently relocated Export War Memorial, just off of the borough parking lot downtown.

The club will also be hosting a car show in its parking lot, 5930 Kennedy Ave., from noon to 6 p.m.
