Charges filed in armed carjacking in Pittsburgh’s Elliott neighborhood

A West Mifflin man has been charged in a violent carjacking incident that police said occurred in Pittsburgh’s Elliot neighborhood last fall.

Several felony charges, including robbery and aggravated assault, were filed Wednesday against Tyler Johnson, 23, of West Mifflin.

Police said it happened in late September at the Herschel Park playground. Officers reported finding a man bleeding from the head who said he had been approached by three armed men, including Johnson, who pistol-whipped him and duct-taped him.

Police said the perpetrators took the man’s money, phone and keys to his vehicle and home, before driving off with his car, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV.

The man was with his son at the playground at the time of the carjacking, according to police.

Johnson was arrested in December on an outstanding warrant.

SWAT team called to domestic incident in South Side

Pittsburgh police said a woman called 911 early Thursday and said she had been assaulted on the city’s South Side.

According to the criminal complaint, Zone 3 offices arrived in the 2600 block of McCord Street around 12:40 a.m.

Police said the SWAT unit was called to verify the woman’s safety and ensure she wasn’t being held against her will. When officers arrived, they made contact with the caller, who initially would not exit the residence or allow them inside, according to police.

When the woman eventually exited the residence, police said the SWAT team cleared the house and found no one else inside.

According to the report, the woman said she was unhurt and refused further medical care.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
