More than 7,000 participate in Pittsburgh Great Race
More than 7,000 runners and walkers laced up their shoes to participate Sunday in the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race.
Rain was no deterrent for the largest 10K in the state, which marked its 45th year.
Squirrel Hill runners Nick Wolk and Jennifer Bigham were first to cross the finish line.
Wolk was a repeat champion with a time of 29:58. Bigham’s time was 34:37 as she claimed the crown for the fourth time.
Participants came from far and wide for the scenic road race. Runners from 35 states and six countries crossed the finish line at Point State Park.
“The rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of the thousands of runners and walkers who achieved their fitness goals today,” race director Brian Katze said. “Today proves why Pittsburghers continue to love this event and have kept this race going strong for 45 years.”
In the 5K division, Clay Burnett from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, was victorious for the fourth time with a time of 15:11.
Jordan Hasay, a first-time champion from San Luis Obispo, Calif., won the women’s 5K with a time of 16:56.

In the 10K handcycle division, Rory Cooper of Gibsonia finished first with a time of 27:36.
There were 18 men and another three who participated virtually — known as the “Perfect Great Racers” — who have participated since the race was founded in 1977.
The Great Race donates $1 from registration to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, a fund held by the Pittsburgh Foundation that supports medical research.
The event has attracted nearly a half million participants since it was founded.
