Monroeville Council on June 14 approved a contract of slightly over $1.5 million for a road paving program.

The project will be carried out by A. Liberoni Inc. of Plum. Despite having yet to work with Monroeville directly, the construction company has completed successful projects for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and numerous area municipalities.

Council also approved a contract with Russell Standard Corp. of O’Hara of approximately $500,000 to carry out a sealcoat and fog seal project, which is expected to preserve road life and quality for around five years.

Due to a legislation passed approximately one year ago, any agency with a website is required to have an agenda that highlights the business to be considered at upcoming meetings posted for public access. Pursuant to the act, council appointed Gateway Engineers of Robinson as municipal professional engineer.

“We would like to thank the 11 engineering firms that submitted RPFs,” said Councilman Bob Stevenson, referring to requests for proposals. “We narrowed it down to two candidates before deciding to appoint Gateway Engineers.”

Council also approved an ordinance that amended both the municipal Administrative Benefits Ordinance and Administrative Salary Ordinance to include police cadets as non-exempt employees. Also amended was the non-uniform pension plan, to align with the current Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement Law.

In addition, council members approved Gordon Conn’s resignation with “reluctance” from the Recreation and Parks Advisory Board.

“We thank you for all of your work and reluctantly say goodbye,” said Mayor Nick Gresock.

He announced that there are vacancies on multiple boards, commissions and authorities, including the Library Board, Human Needs and Resources Advisory Board, and Ethics Board. The meeting also included approval of a liquor license transfer, a piece of vacant property acquired for use of a yard and the approval to establish a vehicle service business in an existing building, and Councilman Eric Poach highlighted the success of increased patrols in local parks.

Council members wished everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July. Councilman Bob Williams put emphasis on the importance of knowing the laws and regulations regarding recreational fireworks.

Council meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in the Monroeville Municipal Building Council Chambers. For more information regarding events in the municipality, visit www.monroeville.pa.us.
