Day of Peace

The Rotary Club of Monroe­ville is hosting an International Day of Peace celebration from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Peace Pole in Monroeville Community Park West, 2399 Tilbrook Road.

Featured are musical performances, an interfaith prayer, candlelight ceremony and opportunities to meet community leaders and youth peace builders.

International Day of Peace, also officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually.

Chili + More to Go at library

Tired of trying to decide what to make for dinner? Monroeville Public Library has you covered with Chili + More to Go.

Just order and pay ahead by Sept. 16, either by visiting www.monroevillelibrary.org or stopping by the main desk to purchase tickets, and then pick up your items from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25. The library will not be open for regular business at that time, but college football players Calijah Kancey, Associated Press Third Team All-American, and Nick Patti, bowl starting quarterback, will be on hand to chat with patrons.

Items for sale include three types of chili, corn muffins, potholders made by library staff and youngsters, and personalized aprons and wooden spoons. A raffle will be held for a Le Creuset stockpot and BBQ items.

September is Love Your Library Month. Thanks to the Jack Buncher Foundation, all donations made through September will be subject to a prorated match. September is a great time to make your gift go even further to support your library and your community.

Craft show scheduled

A fall craft and vendor show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Divine Mercy Academy, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville.

Cost for vendors is $50 per spot plus a raffle donation. For more information, contact dmamonroeville@gmail.com.

Cancer screenings offered

Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute’s new comprehensive cancer screening clinic offers the opportunity to complete a full slate of cancer screening tests in one convenient visit.

Screenings for seven different cancers will be offered, and depending on which screenings are selected, can be completed in as little as an hour’s visit. Eligibility for screenings depends on age, gender and other factors.

The screenings are offered on Fridays at AHN Cancer Institute at Forbes Hospital, 2626 Haymaker Road Monroeville, and AHN West Penn Hospital, Mellon Pavilion, Suite 340, in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

Screenings are available for the following cancers: breast (ages 40 and up), cervical (ages 21-65), colorectal (ages 45 and up), head and neck (ages 18 and up), lung (ages 50-80 with history of smoking), prostate (ages 45 and up) and skin (ages 18 and up)

Enrollment is open to AHN and non-AHN patients. Insurance coverage is required. To make an appointment, call 412-888-AHN2 (2462).

Symphony East ‘Dixieland’ picnic

Symphony East will host a Dixieland box-lunch picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19 at St. Alban’s Anglican Church picnic pavilion, 4920 Cline Hollow Road in Murrysville.

The 1 p.m. performance will feature the Ralph Guzzi Dixieland Band. The cost is $30 per person and includes a picnic lunch at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required by Sept. 12. No tickets will be sold the day of the event.

Women’s Business Network

Women’s Business Network is an award-winning business association spanning over 20 chapters throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. Members can take advantage of networking with other business women throughout the region, ongoing professional education and leadership opportunities.

Benefit golf outing

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection will host a Sept. 26 golf outing to benefit Toys for Pittsburgh Tikes.

The event will take place at the Westmoreland Country Club, 7100 Mellon Road in Penn Township. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 9 o’clock shotgun start.

Corn maze opens

The Gearhard Farms 23rd annual Corn Maze will be open on weekends through Oct. 30 at the farm, 5909 Saltsburg Road in Murrysville.

Each year, the maze is cut in a different shape, with four challenges for participants: find the exit, draw the maze’s picture design as you walk the paths, answer the 20 trivia questions posted throughout, and find all five animal pictures hidden in the maze.

The farm also has hayrides, a pumpkin patch, a small concession stand and a fall decoration sales area.
