Aging and the Healthy Brain

Monroeville United Methodist Church, 219 Center Road will be presenting a free program about “Aging and the Healthy Brain” at 7 p.m. Sept. 12.

Presenting the program will be Dr. Howard J. Aizenstein, a geriatric psychiatrist and director of the University of Pittsburgh Geriatric Psychiatry Neuroimaging program, and Dr. Akiko Mizuno, a research instructor in psychiatry, also within the GPN lab.

The presentation will address healthy brain aging and mental health challenges faced by the elderly population, and will include topics about treatment and prevention of brain diseases such as dementia, late-life depression and other cognitive challenges.

Resources to help with these challenges within Pittsburgh’s older adult community also will be provided.

Information will be given about the research that is being conducted using magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography studies to learn more about those conditions and how to effectively treat them.

The program is not just for older adults. No advance reservations are needed.

Gateway has gone digital for all athletic event tickets.

‘Welcome back’ to club

The International Women’s Club will start its 2022-23 year on Sept. 9 at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 2310 Haymaker Road, Monroeville.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. as a “welcome back” and chance for members to get together after the restrictions caused by covid-19. All members are requested to bring a dish to serve.

Programs for the coming year are scheduled:

• Oct. 7, singer Brian Mehan

• Nov. 4, Dr. Barbara Burstin, author of “Sophie: the Incomparable Mayor Masloff”

• Dec. 2, holiday celebration

• March 3, Pipa, traditional Chinese musical instrument performance by Nancy Xiao and students

• April 14, Container Gardening presentation by a Penn State master gardener

• May 19, luncheon

Because of covid, babysitting service is suspended until further notice.

Benefit golf outing

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection will host a Sept. 26 golf outing to benefit Toys for Pittsburgh Tikes.

It will take place at the Westmoreland Country Club, 7100 Mellon Road in Penn Township. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
