On July 12, Monroeville council members congratulated the quick actions of Councilman Eric Poach and police Chief Doug Cole when a local resident collapsed at the previous week’s Citizen’s Night meeting.

Thanks to their timely response of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and contacting emergency authorities, the resident is back at home and recovering, according to Mayor Nick Gresock.

“He wants me to express his gratitude to everybody and he is planning to come to more meetings,” Gresock said.

After seeing the emergency firsthand, Gresock has proposed that all municipal staff members be retrained in CPR, including the use of an automated external defibrillator. The training will include consistent review of correct procedures and will be discussed more in depth at next month’s council meeting.

Also on July 12:

• Council welcomed two new municipal staff members. Marissa Shultz was hired as the new building and engineering secretary, and Flora Papageorgiou filled the recreation and parks secretary position.

• An ordinance to amend the Property Maintenance chapter of the municipality codes was approved. The amendment details the improved maintenance of municipal property, including snow and ice removal, leaves and grass waste disposal and billboards and outdoor signs.

The ordinance previously had been tabled due to additional regulations to digital signs being discussed.

• Council voted to enter an agreement for the municipality to participate with Allegheny County for snow and ice control on county roads for the next three years.

Monroeville will be responsible for clearing sections of county roads that run through the municipality. In return, the county will pay the municipality for its services.

• During the municipal staff reports, manager Timothy Little discussed multiple options to alleviate a storage space issue caused by archived VHS tapes containing previous council meeting footage. The tapes date back to 1984 and are as recent as 2010.

• Council announced that the Community Day 5K race will be returning on July 30. The race has a 9 a.m. start time, and Community Day festivities will begin at 11 at Community Park West.

National Night Out will also be hosted at Community Park West, at 6 p.m. Aug. 2.
