A Monroeville police officer was shot multiple times late Wednesday by an armed robbery suspect, according to Allegheny County Police.

A Monroeville police officer was shot “multiple times” Wednesday night as he approached an armed robbery suspect, according to Allegheny County Police.

The officer was listed in stable condition at an area hospital late Wednesday.

Allegheny County Police said in a news release that Monroeville’s emergency dispatching center was notified at 9:13 p.m. of an armed robbery in the 4100 block of William Penn Highway.

Four minutes later, a Monroeville police officer on Monroeville Boulevard near Stonecliffe Drive saw a man matching the suspect’s description.

“As the officer approached, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the police vehicle, striking the officer multiple times.”

County police said responding officers encountered the suspect a minute later in a parking lot on Stonecliffe Drive.

The suspect, a man who police did not identify, was taken into custody without incident.

County police did not identify where the armed robbery took place, nor did they identify the officer who was shot.

The Monroeville Police Department requested the assistance of the Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit detectives.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the County Police Tip Line 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.

Messages to Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole were not immediately returned Wednesday evening.
