The Mellon Park Tennis Center reopened this weekend after being closed for renovations for seven months.

The Department of Public Works replaced the dome over the five tennis courts at the tennis center in Mellon Park in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside and Point Breeze neighborhoods.

The dome was at the end of its 20-year lifespan, officials said.

Crews also replaced court surfaces and installed a new air handler system.

Public Works teamed up with CitiParks to collaborate on the renovations, said Public Works Director Chris Hornstein. The renovations have created “an improved park amenity that serves many of our residents,” he said.

“We look forward to individuals getting back on the courts and putting them to good use,” Hornstein said.

The tennis center reopened Saturday for instructional clinics and regular operations resumed Sunday.

City officials celebrated the reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning.

This weekend also marked the 20th anniversary of the Mellon Park Tennis Center.

“We know our tennis regulars are anxious to get back on the indoor courts at the bubble,” CitiParks Director Kathryn Vargas said.

Regular hours for the tennis center are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
