Large fire breaks out at Shaler home
At least 10 fire departments responded to a large house fire Monday evening in Shaler.
According to Cherry City volunteer fire Chief, Nick Skalos, the fire started at 5:30 p.m. in the garage of the home in the 300 block of Hawthorne Road. He said that the fire extended into the house.
The owners and their dog weren’t home when the blaze began.
An explosion was heard at about 6:30 p.m.
“The explosion was from the gas tank of the vehicle inside (the garage),” Skalos said. “There were no injuries with that.”
The fire took about an hour and a half to knock down.
“We had some hidden fire in the walls and the attic space,” Skalos said.
Firefighters from Reserve, Sharpsburg, Aspinwall, West View, Etna, Undercliff, Ross, Blawnox, Cherry City and Bauerstown were among those responding to the blaze.
“We have multiple crews from Shaler, Ross, Etna that assisted us with this fire,” Skalos said. “We appreciate all their help with this.”
