The Wilkinsburg Police Department is teaming up with the Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project for Peace in an effort to reduce the number of firearms in the community in advance of the holiday season.

A gun buyback event is slated for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 in the lobby of the Wilkinsburg Borough Building, 605 Ross Ave.

Participants will receive a $50 Giant Eagle gift certificate for turning in a handgun and a $25 gift certificate for turning in a rifle.

Ammunition, knives, hand grenades and brass knuckles also will be accepted at the event, but no compensation will be provided for those items.

No questions will be asked of participants, who must be at least 21 and must wear a mask inside the building.

The mission of the Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project for Peace is to end youth and gun violence in Wilkinsburg and areas beyond.
