Taking a Monday off for a round of golf is a good thing, at least for high school students from Franklin Park looking for extra college funds.
All the proceeds from Franklin Park’s 21st annual Community Scholarship Golf Outing, to be held July 29 at Shannopin Country Club in Ben Avon Heights and Ross Township, supports the Franklin Park Scholarship Fund.
Since the fund’s inception, the borough has awarded 200 scholarships totaling more than $200,000, and this year the award was increased to $1,500 for each scholarship recipient, according to Rege Ebner Jr., borough manager.
“This event provides an opportunity for folks to enjoy breakfast, lunch and a day of golf at beautiful Shannopin Country Club, and a chance to network with borough staff and elected officials, as well as residents and vendors, all while benefiting a worthy cause,” Ebner said.
Registration and a continental breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30. Lunch and awards are set for 2 p.m.
The golf outing is an 18-hole team scramble with first-, second- and third place prizes, hole-in-one and putting contests, a prize drawing and individual skill prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt.
“For a select few golfers, victory results in bragging rights for the next year,” Ebner said.
Also, winning teams get their names engraved on The Franklin Cup every year.
Golf sponsorships are still available, and depending on the level, sponsors will receive benefits f including advertising in the borough’s newsletters, Ebner said.
Event organizers are looking for additional event and lunch sponsors, golfers and prize donations, according to Donna Platt, administrative assistant to the borough manager. Contact the borough office for details at 412-364-4115, ext. 302, or dplatt@franklinparkborough.us.
Golf registrations and sponsorship opportunities are requested by July 17.
The event is largely handled by borough staff members, including reservations, judging the hole-in-one and putting contests, and prize distribution during lunch. Jim Huff, director of the Clover Hill Golf Course and park facilities, and Platt do the majority of the work to make this event successful, Ebner said.
Overall, players can demonstrate their golfing skills while enjoying themselves, according to Ebner.
“There is a mixture of friendly and serious competition, as evidenced by the scores that are turned in,” he said.
The scholarships typically are announced in the spring, and applications are available at at www.franklinparkborough.us or by calling the borough office. Scholarship applications are reviewed by a selection committee appointed by Franklin Park Borough Council.
The 2024 scholarship recipients are Vijay Arora, Claire Cho, Ava DiGiacomo, Caileigh Duffy, Mary Gauntner, Megan Manesiotis, Max McCarran, Evan O’Keefe, Natalie Rak, Jake Rechenmacher, Aneri Shethji, Benjamin Truesdell and Collin Wang.
