The Giant Eagle on Shakespeare Street in Shadyside, pictured Wednesday, June 15, 2022, is scheduled to close in July.

The Giant Eagle supermarket on Shakespeare Street in Shadyside is set to close as a realtor moves ahead with redevelopment plans for its surrounding plaza.

The store will close at 6 p.m. on July 23, according to a Giant Eagle spokesman.

“Understanding the important role the store plays in the community, Giant Eagle has taken numerous steps to provide care during the supermarket closure time period,” the company said in a statement.

ECHO Realty, which owns the site at Penn and Shady avenues known as Shady Hill Center, is eyeing a mixed-use redevelopment project that would include retail space, a parking garage and residential units.

The Giant Eagle Pharmacy will operate a temporary location at the Village of Eastside on Penn Avenue.

The Giant Eagle Mobile Market — a mobile store stocked with more than 400 products ranging from fresh produce, meat and dairy to a variety of grocery staples — is making weekly stops at nearby sites.

The mobile market will be at Homewood YMCA from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. every Monday, Kingsley Association from 12:30 p.m. till 2 p.m. every Thursday and Bethany Center from 2:30 p.m. till 4 p.m. every Thursday.

Giant Eagle offers a Community Pickup Point service that allows shoppers to order online and pick up their groceries at key community centers in their neighborhoods. The service can drop off orders at Kelly Hamilton Homes in Homewood and the Environment and Energy Community Outreach Center in Larimer.

Convenience fees are waived for all Community Pickup Point orders, the company said.

People who typically shop at the Shakespeare Street store are also urged to visit the nearby Shadyside Market District on Centre and Negley Avenues.
