Pittsburgh’s CitiParks is set to open five warming centers on Sunday, with the expected arrival of bitter cold temperatures well below freezing.

Warming stations will be open to all from noon to 6 p.m. at the following five Pittsburgh Healthy Active Living Community Centers:

• Beechview, 1555 Broadway Ave.

• Greenfield , 745 Greenfield Ave.

• Homewood, 7321 Frankstown Road

• Sheraden, 720 Sherwood Ave.

• South Side Market House, 12th and Bingham streets.

The centers also are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

CitiParks typically opens warming centers when the high temperatures are predicted to be 20 degrees or lower.

Ashley Daugherty, meteorologist with TribLive news partner WTAE, said Sunday will bring the coldest blast of air so far this season.

According to her forecast, the temperatures will hover around 10 degrees as the day starts, with wind chills dropping below zero.

The high on Sunday isn’t expected to top 20 degrees, with wind chills expected to stay in the single digits through the afternoon.

“It will be dangerous to be outside for extended periods,” Daugherty said. “The cold continues Monday with low temperatures in the teens and highs in the 20s. Wind chills will likely start near zero Monday morning.

“We will finally break the arctic blast Tuesday as high temperatures warm to near freezing. Temperatures will reach 50 for the first time this month on Thursday with rain showers.”
